Soverna | Smooth and Smokey

Soverna are a three piece rock band from Wexford, who I think fall into the grunge or alt rock category quite well. They remind me a lot of Alice in Chains but they have definitely crafted their own unique sound. The band consists of Keith Devereux on guitar and vocals, Barry O'Connor on bass plus backing vocals and Richie Mason conducting operations with precision on drums. The vocal harmonies are quite special and while they let rip with some chainsaw raw aggression when needed, the vocals are really smooth and easy on the ear, due to the well mixed recordings.

Soverna have recently released their debut EP, What We've Lost. It's a really consistent offering and showcases five great tracks. It's heavy as hell, yet it's smooth like aged whiskey. There are headbanging walls of sounds and there are sections where the guitar and bass do their own thing and play off each other, showcasing some great musicianship and song writing ability. The drums are stomping and Richie Mason controls the tempo like a seasoned pro. The opening track, Catacomb, is the lead single and it opens proceedings nicely. The chorus is really groovy on this. My favourite track at the moment by Soverna is, Sky Parlour. It features a slow paced and relaxing verse that has a deceptively crunching bass line underneath with some nicely toned guitar notes ringing over it. It all leads into a brain stomping aggressive chorus.

Go check them out for yourself! Support Irish bands. I once thought there weren't many great bands from Wexford. I was wrong. It's a hot spot for heavy bands at the moment and long may it last.
