Perish The Thought - Hard As Ever

Perish The Thought are an alt metal band from Cork who formed back in 2006, quickly releasing their debut EP, Lullabies Of Loyalty with a follow up EP arriving 2008. It was in early 2024 when I first heard of this band and it was their second EP, Prose For Pariahs that caught my attention. It's an absolute stomping collection of heavy riffs and melodic groovy choruses. Some of their riffs could dislocate your neck and you'd still raise devil horns for the smooth chorus melodies. The opening two tracks, Turn It Off and Who Cares, being the pick of the bunch for me.

Perish The Thought is made up of Julian O'Gorman on vocals, Dave Hynes on guitar, John Kavanagh on bass and Ian Walsh on drums. In 2009, the band split up but in 2021, the world was different and they reappeared with a new single called Comfort in Lies, which is probably my favourite Perish The Thought track to date. It's a great little thrashy stomper that sounds like Therapy? cross with Metallica.

Fast forward to 2024 and Perish The Thought are back with a new 5 track EP called, Carrion. The opening track (which is also the title track) is a total stomper and in my opinion is a little heavier, somewhat more aggressive and bit more thrashy than previous offerings. The drumming from Ian Walsh is incredible and really stands out for me. The second song, Undivided, features a crunching verse riff before a smooth transition to a really melodic chorus. I like this one a lot. DSM-5 starts off with a groove metal riff and then rips into a skull buster while Night on the Tiles, is a great thrash metal song. The EP is closed by a more slow paced grunge track called, Fracture, which is a great song that has some nice notes in the guitar solo.
