Moonlight Eclipse are a young rock band from Athenry in Galway and even though they range from 15-18 years of age, they are already on their way to becoming one of the best young rock bands on the scene. Four friends met in school and formed a band that consists of, Blathín Hogan on vocals and guitar, Lucas Bradley on lead guitar, Aoife Keague on bass and Eoin Keague on drums. They note their influences as, Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, Green Day, Blur, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, System of a Down, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, Metallica and Radiohead. As you can see, they have had a great education and that stands to them in their song writing and has shaped their journey as musicians.
Starting with the impressive debut single, Devils Town in 2023, they have now released eight excellent singles to date, which seem to have been well received. I would not say they sound exactly like any of their influences, but there are lots of subtle connections to their legendary heroes. The stand out single is Wandering Problem, which was released in July of 2024 but would not sound out of place in any decade from the 70's onwards. It's a magnificent song full of soul and blues. The vocal melody from Blathín is as good as it gets. It's like she has lived a thousand lives, such is the emotional delivery. I really like the song Addicted to the Pain, which is a really fun radio friendly song with cool riff in the main hook of the chorus. The bass lines and bass tone stand out in most of their songs and really add a nice 70's metal undertone to a lot of their tracks. It's pretty cool. Another favourite of mine is B.l.a which is another heavy rock song oozing with swagger, groove and vocal tones that are holding my ears hostage.
Caught in a Fire is the latest single from Moonlight Eclipse and it's a timeless classic. The song starts of with atmospheric fire crackling sounds that transport me back to the 70's for a bass led intro that Black Sabbath would be proud of. The song resets then into a fresh sounding rebirth of clean but very hypnotic guitar notes and stunning vocals. As the drums and bass kick back in, you feel the energy rise and are guided back into a dark and heavy chorus that wonderfully contrasts the fire imagery that the lyrics detail. I bet the devil dances to this one before bed. There's a really cool mix of styles going on here. It feels like doom metal, psychedelic rock and indie rock all merged into a glorious modern day sound. I'm so impressed by this band and I really think that there's no end of possibility for them, if they can keep up this quality of song writing output. They already have the makings of a remarkable debut album which I'd love to get on vinyl. Go check them out and support them as you would any young American band.
