Game Set is a three piece hip hop band from Meath who blend rap with funk and disco beats. They sound very old school and groovy, yet fresh and modern at the same time. They have released three singles to date and it's the latest release, Party's Over, which has caught my attention. A song about a party that got out of control, it features a funky bass line and a catchy hook in the chorus, "One monkey don't stop the show," but it's the twin rapper element that I liked best. This really hit the spot. The second rap verse in particular sounds like classic American rap from the 80's/90's and is definitely my favourite part,
"Walking home and I did nothing
Fuck it
I'mma a try sniff me out somethin'
Gonna find a place where the party's still pumpin
A place where I get the drinks for nothing
And if you standing by don't let me catch you frontin'
I'm in the mood that I'll bottle you for nothing"
These lyrics are delivered with attitude and swagger and I really like the the rhythm and flow of the verse. It's cool and memorable.
Earlier this year, Game Set released their debut single, New Car Feeling followed by Down 'n Out, the latter which is particularly groovy. I proudly admit that I'm a rocker at heart but when a hip hop band catch my ears, you know they're good. I'd definitely recommend that everyone check out Game Set and start groovin' with attitude.
